Let’s face it–we all avoid that certain someone who is constantly complaining, continually stressed, or just always in a bad mood. Why? Their energy is contagious, and being around negative energy can seriously bring you down.
For better or worse, your energy affects so much around you, including other people. Your energy can have a significant impact on your career, and that’s especially true when you’re working directly with clients.
The real estate industry is an emotional one; as an agent, you’re in the midst of helping people make one of the most important decisions of their lives! No doubt your job can be stressful, but it’s crucial to understand that your clients can sense how you feel.
It’s important to deal with negative emotions as they arise. If not, you’re at risk for becoming that agent no one wants to work with. It may even end up jeopardizing your career. Don’t underestimate the power of positive energy!
Let’s look at some foolproof ways to keep those energies in check:
- Stop and Evaluate
Look at the situation and identify exactly why you are frustrated, angry, or upset. Once you have clearly identified what it is that’s bothering you, you can start thinking of ways to solve it. You always have the power to change how you feel!
- Find the Positive
Find something positive about the situation. Maybe your boss is always late to your meetings. Instead of getting frustrated, use that extra time to prepare. Or, use those few minutes to relax! Laura Ingalls Wilder was spot on when she wrote, “There is good in everything, if only we look for it.”
- Examine Your Mindset
Your listing presentation just got rescheduled for the third time. It’s okay to be disappointed, but don’t let those feelings take over. When things don’t go as planned, take a moment to realize that that’s just a part of life! If everything were easy, we’d have no opportunities to learn and grow. Life would be so boring!
- Embrace Uncertainty
We all worry; it’s natural. Too much worrying, however, does more harm than good. It affects our job performance, how we interact with people, and even how we live. Practice accepting the fact that some things are simply out of your control. Focus on the present instead of worrying about the uncertain future. Will you ever land that dream client? Maybe. But it’s okay if you don’t, too.
No one wants to work with the super-stressed, uneasy and uptight real estate agent. Chances are, your clients are experiencing these feelings throughout the whole home-buying process. They shouldn’t have to cope with your stress, too!
Don’t overwork yourself to the point of exhaustion and irritability. Take a break if you need one, go for a walk at lunch, allow your body and mind to recharge. Meet your clients with calmness and confidence to help them in the chaos of buying or selling a home!
We all experience negative emotions, but it’s important we learn to cope with them. Remember that your energy is contagious and negativity is easily spread. Don’t let it affect your relationships with coworkers, clients, friends, family, and anyone else out there!
Check-in with how you feel on a daily basis. Your clients can sense your emotions, and they most likely are not going to overlook them. Maya Angelou said it best: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
